Installing a Loopback Adapter on Windows 2003

Installing a Loopback Adapter on Windows 2003 or Windows XP

There are various pre-requisites to installing Oracel 11g but I’m sure you’ll have met most of them already. The one that you’re not likely to have is the installation of the Loopback adapter in Windows Server 2003. I wanted to save you the time of reading through the details and so have pasted below the instructions for this from the Oracle website. Full details can be found at: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14316/reqs.htm#CHDGIFBC

To install a loopback adapter on Windows 2003 or Windows XP:

Open the Windows Control Panel.

Double-click Add Hardware to start the Add Hardware wizard.

In the Welcome window, click Next.

In the Is the hardware connected? window, select Yes, I have already connected the hardware, and click Next.

In the The following hardware is already installed on your computer window, in the list of installed hardware, select Add a new hardware device, and click Next.

In the The wizard can help you install other hardware window, select Install the hardware that I manually select from a list, and click Next.

From the list of hardware types, select the type of hardware you are installing window, select Network adapters, and click Next.

In the Select Network Adapter window, make the following selections:

Manufacturer: Select Microsoft.

Network Adapter: Select Microsoft Loopback Adapter.

Click Next.

In the The wizard is ready to install your hardware window, click Next.

In the Completing the Add Hardware Wizard window, click Finish.

If you are using Windows 2003, restart your computer.

Right-click My Network Places on the desktop and choose Properties. This displays the Network Connections Control Panel.

Right-click the connection that was just created. This is usually named “Local Area Connection 2″. Choose Properties.

On the General tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click Properties.

In the Properties dialog box, click Use the following IP address and do the following:

IP Address: Enter a non-routable IP for the loopback adapter. Oracle recommends the following non-routable addresses:

192.168.x.x (x is any value between 0 and 255)

10.10.10.10

Subnet mask: Enter 255.255.255.0.

Record the values you entered, which you will need later in this procedure.

Leave all other fields empty.

Click OK.

Click OK.

Close Network Connections.

Restart the computer.

Add a line to the SYSTEM_DRIVE:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts file with the following format, after the localhost line:

IP_address hostname.domainname hostname

where:

IP_address is the non-routable IP address you entered in step 16.

hostname is the name of the computer.

domainname is the name of the domain.

For example:

10.10.10.10 mycomputer.mydomain.com mycomputer

Check the network configuration:

Open System in the Control Panel, and select the Computer Name tab. In Full computer name, make sure you see the host name and the domain name, for example, sales.us.mycompany.com.

Click Change. In Computer name, you should see the hostname, and in Full computer name, you should see the host name and domain name. Using the previous example, the host name would be sales and the domain would be us.mycompany.com.

Click More. In Primary DNS suffix of this computer, you should see the domain name, for example, us.mycompany.com.

Creating Hyperion Planning Classic Applications

July 31st, 2009

In my previous tutorials I have shown how to install and configure Hyperion System 9.3.1 and also which order to start the services.  You now have the system running but where do you start?  I was planning to provide a tutorial on how to create applications but then I stumbled upon one from Oracle that is totally ideal, so instead of reinventing the wheel I thought I’d just give you a link to some really nice tutorials to get you started.

Let me know what you think.

Installing Oracle Hyperion system 11.1.1.2 aka EPM 11.1.1.2

July 30th, 2009

I’d heard from some of our consultants in California that the new system 11 was tricky to install and it had so many complications. For that reason I never really thought about installing it until I had some time on my hands. Unfortunately that time will never come so a couple of days ago I decided to give it a go on my old xp system. To my amazement it worked first time and it was the easiest install yet….

That was all good until I created a datasource and after the next reboot I couldn’t get  some of the services to start up. No time to deal with that right away but it gave me an idea for the next exercise. I’d like to create a step by step guide on how to install, configure and troubleshoot for EPM 11.1.1.2, however I need to know which operating system you’d like to install it on. I’ve been blogging for nearly a month now and I know it’s early days but I’d like to receive some feedback and some comments from you guys, therefore I will begin the System 11.1.1.2 tutorial when I have received 30 comments on this site. You don’t need to register to leave a comment and it only takes a few seconds. Thanks

Installing Hyperion Planning – Part 5 Planning

Now we come to the exciting bit, installing Hyperion Planning.  Before we go any further, just one thing I would like to point out.  Earlier on I mentioned that we need to have IIS and .Netframework 2 installed on the machine. Before installing planning I like to set ASP.NET to allow on the Web Service Extension within IIS Manager.  The Hyperion Planning Install should take care of this automatically but I’ve had a couple of issues with this in the past and now I like to be cautious.

Moving onto the Planning install, please follow the instructions below:

Installing Hyperion Planning – Part 4 Provider Services

July 24th, 2009

Welcome back to this series of tutorials where I guide you through the installation of Hyperion Planning on System 9.3.1.  So far we have installed and configured SQL Server as our database, then we installed and configured Shared Services.  In the previous section I showed you how to install and configure Essbase.  The next step in the process is to install the Provider Services.  This is pretty straight forward and you can simply follow the instructions below:

Installing Hyperion Planning – Part 2 Shared Services

July 15th, 2009

Now that we have the SQL Server installed and configured with our ‘hypdb’ database, we’re ready to install the System 9.3.1 suite. You can download the Hyperion applications from:

http://edelivery.oracle.com

I’ll be focusing this installation guide on:

Hyperion Performance Management and BI (9.3.1) Media Pack from Microsoft Windows (32 – bit)

You will need to download the following components:

Hyperion Shared Services Release 9.3.1 Microsoft Windows x86 Installer English
Hyperion Essbase Administration Services – System 9 Release 9.3.1.3 Windows Installer
Hyperion Essbase – System 9 Release 9.3.1.3 Server Windows Installer

Installing Hyperion Planning – Part 1b SQL Server Setup

July 14th, 2009

In the second section of Part 1 I’d like to show you how to set up the SQL Server for Hyperion System 9.3.1. I would like to stress that this is not the only way to configure SQL for Hyperion, this is just my way for a stand alone system. Maybe I might be doing a few extra steps that need be here but it eliminates other likely issues further ahead.
Before we start I feel compelled to let you know that it is more efficient to setup multiple user accounts and databases for the applications. You could for example create a ‘hss’ database with ‘hssuser’ for Shared Services and ‘plan’ with user ‘planuser’ for the Hyperion Planning application. On a live system that would be ideal but creating a ‘hypdb’ database with ‘hypuser’ on a standalone server works just as good.
So without further ado, please find the SQL Server setup instructions below:

Hyperion Planning Application Deploy aborted error

July 14th, 2009

Today I was deploying an application, that validated successfully, but aborted every time. The solution I found was to create a new datasource from the configuration utility. This seemed to resolve the issue and I was able to deploy the application from Workspace successfully.
